Highlights State Street's index on the sentiment of institutional investors fell sharply this month, to 91.6 from a slightly revised 100.8 in January. Risk aversion is apparent in all regions with Europe showing the most month-to-month deterioration. The report points to turmoil in the Middle East and policy tightening in Asia as the likely roots for the trouble, which it said is raising qualms about the pace of the recent equity run-up in developed markets. According to the report, there is also a "discernible" lack of interest in US equities.

The State Street Investor Confidence Index measures confidence by looking at actual levels of risk in investment portfolios. This is not an attitude survey. The State Street Investor Confidence Index measures confidence directly by assessing the changes in investor holdings of equities.
