Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain-store sales slowed in February as cold weather held down traffic, especially compared to the unusual warmth of January. Still, most chains posted respectable results headed by Wal-Mart with a 3.2% rise in same-store sales. Wal-Mart rival Target posted a 3.6% gain. But some apparel chains did show slowing, including teenwear king Abercrombie & Fitch that broke a long chain of spectacular results with a 6% decline. But many other apparel chains did well, including women's chain Ann Taylor that posted a 5.6% gain.

The results are mixed but combined with firm vehicle sales posted yesterday shouldn't raise too much concern over the Commerce Department's retail trade report at mid-month. Retailer shares were mostly lower in early trading this morning.
