Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
March chain-store sales suffered badly from the absence of Easter, though the slowdown is certain to be made up in April. Wal-Mart offers the best example, posting only a 1.4% gain in U.S. same-store sales but estimating a sharp 4 to 6% rebound in April. Most chains posted a March same-store increase of 1 to 2%. The outlook for next Thursday's retail trade report for March is not bright, because of Easter as well as the month's soft car sales.
