Chain Store Sales
Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores posted soft results in October, hurt by warm weather that limited sales of seasonal merchandise. Chains reported same-store sales growth of roughly 2 percent in the month, a moderate gain on the low end of trend. Many chains said comparisons were hurt by last year's hurricanes which tripped restocking of goods in the Gulf area. The results, combined with yesterday's soft vehicle sales, suggest that lower gas prices and gains in the stock market have yet to stimulate consumer spending. Retail trade data will be released a week from Friday.
