Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
Chain stores reported firm sales in January in line with trend and pointing to steady readings in next Wednesday's retail trade report. The results show same-store sales growing roughly 2 percent, a bit better than recent trend, with overall sales about 7%, no better than trend. The month's weather, warm at the beginning and cold at the end, had a mixed effect on sales with some chains saying weather helped their results while others said it hurt results. Sales at Wal-Mart were encouraging as the chain posted above trend sales of about 2 percent for same-store sales and a better gain in the high single digits for total sales. The results had little effect on share prices for retailers which were mixed in morning trade.
