Highlights
Challenger's layoff count, swollen by auto layoffs, totaled a steep 103,466 in January vs. December's 107,822 in results that won't dim expectations for what is expected to be a strong employment report tomorrow. Automotive showed the biggest rise in layoff intentions in the month, at 36,299 vs. only 4,130 in December. Retail also showed a big rise in layoffs, to 13,430 vs. 2,042 in what is a normal seasonal reduction from the holidays (note Challenger data are not adjusted).
Hiring intentions were a soft 13,942 vs. 42,972 in December. Hiring was led ironically by the automotive sector at 2,641 in the month, a sector where announcements of layoff plans by GM and Ford have sent a chill through the nation's factory employment outlook.
