Highlights
Challenger's layoff count totaled 87,437 in February vs. 103,466 in January and vs. 108,387 in February last year. The results will help firm expectations for healthy payroll growth in next week's February employment report.
The food industry showed the most layoffs in February followed by government/non-profit. Automotive showed only modest layoffs though layoff plans at GM and Ford spell trouble for this sector in the months ahead.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
