Highlights
U.S. companies announced 64,975 layoffs in March, down from 87,437 in February and 86,396 in March last year. The latest total is the lowest in nearly a year. Hiring intentions offered more good news, at 24,376 and about double the totals for February and January. The results didn't move the markets but they are likely to firm confidence for what is expected to be a solid monthly employment report on Friday.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
