Released on 5/2/06 For Apr 2006
Announced Layoffs, Level
 Actual 59,688
 Previous 64,975

Highlights
Layoff announcements eased up slightly in April, perhaps a good sign for Friday's big jobs report. Challenger's layoff count totaled 59,688 in April, down from 64,975 in March and compared with 57,861 in April last year. Hiring announcements were also positive, at 40,793 vs. 24,376 in March. Press reports and now Challenger are pointing to strong payroll growth for April. The monster employment report on Thursday, which compiles data from Internet job boards, will be interesting to watch.

Trends
[Chart] The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily.
