Highlights
Challenger's job-cut count rose to 67,176 vs. May's 53,716 but well down from last June's 110,996. A quarter-to-quarter comparison shows the improvement underway as second quarter announcements totaled 180,580, well down from prior quarters including the first-quarter total of 255,878. The jobs market may be firming right at the time that economic growth is expected to slow, possibly setting up another sharp twist for Federal Reserve expectations. The next indicator on the jobs market will be weekly jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET followed by the ISM non-manufacturing employment index at 10:00 a.m., the latter having shown solid strength in recent months. Of course Friday will see the release of the big monthly jobs report.
