Highlights
A business day too late, Challenger's job-cut count totaled a heavy 65,278 in August vs. 37,178 in July but slightly lower than 70,571 in August last year. On Friday the Labor Department reported a rise of 128,000 in non-farm payroll indicating soft conditions in the labor market, a result consistent with today's Challenger count.

Trends
|
The Challenger Job-Cut Report could serve as a leading indicator for new jobless claims. However, not all layoff announcements result in near term job losses. For instance, companies often announce layoffs that will result in job losses but not immediately. Companies would simply not replace workers who quit voluntarily. |
