Consumer Confidence
Definition
The Conference Board compiles a survey of consumer attitudes on present economic conditions and expectations of future conditions. Five thousand consumers across the country are surveyed each month. While the level of consumer confidence is associated with consumer spending, the two do not move in tandem each and every month.  Why Investors Care

Highlights
The Conference Board's consumer confidence index rose to a higher-than-expected 105.7 in June vs. 104.7 in May. Grabbing even more attention may be a sharp fall back in inflation expectations, at an annual rate of 5.1 percent vs. 5.6 percent in May. Inflation expectations historically show sharp reactions but not long-lasting reactions to spikes in gasoline prices.

Current job readings were mixed with those saying jobs are hard to get down a bit to 19.9 percent from 20.2 percent but those saying jobs are plentiful also down, to 28.1 percent from 29.1 percent. Six-month expectations ticked higher but remain subdued with more seeing more jobs, 15.6 vs. 14.8 percent, and fewer seeing fewer jobs, 17.0 vs. 18.0 percent. Another positive, a smaller percentage, 11.8 vs. 12.9 percent, see worsening conditions ahead. But buying plans for autos fell sharply, not a good omen for auto sales.

Financial markets showed little initial reaction to the data which were released along side a soft existing home sales report. But the pop higher in the index, along with declining inflation expectations, are positive signs for growth and price stability.

Market Consensus Before Announcement
The Conference Board's consumer confidence index fell sharply in May to 103.2 from 109.8 in April. The decline reflected the effects of high gas prices, but job readings also deteriorated. One big negative was a sharp decline in overall consumer expectations, down to 83.7 from 92.3 in April.

Consumer confidence Consensus Forecast for June 06: 104.0
Range: 101.0 to 105.0
Trends
[Chart] Typically retail sales will move in tandem with consumer optimism - although not necessarily each and every month.
