The National Association of Realtors developed the pending home sales index as a leading indicator of housing activity. As such, it is a leading indicator of existing home sales, not new home sales. A pending sale is one in which a contract was signed, but not yet closed. It usually takes four to six weeks to close a contracted sale. Why Investors Care

Highlights
October's pending home sales index slipped to 107.2 from 109.1 in September, showing small declines in all regions. Year-on-year, the index is down 13.2 percent, an improvement from a 13.6 percent decline in September that the National Association of Realtors, which compiles the report, cited as evidence of improvement in the housing sector. Next data on the housing market will be the mortgage bankers' report Wednesday morning.
