PriorPrior RevisedConsensusConsensus RangeActual
ADP employment219,000 217,000 182,000 170,000  to 205,000 163,000

Highlights
ADP sees a lower-than-expected but still solid 163,000 rise in private payrolls for August. ADP has underestimated the last two reports and the August estimate compares with a 190,000 consensus for private payrolls in tomorrow's employment report.

Consensus Outlook
Econoday's consensus for ADP's private payroll estimate in August is 182,000 which would compare with 219,000 in ADP's July estimate and against 170,000 in the government's data for July. ADP sharply over-estimated July's strength in the labor market after underestimating strength in the prior two reports.

Definition
The national employment report from Automated Data Processing Inc. is computed from ADP records that represent approximately 400,000 U.S. business clients and approximately 23 million U.S. employees working in all private industrial sectors. ADP contracted with Moody’s Analytics to compute a monthly report that would ultimately help to predict monthly nonfarm payrolls from the Bureau of Labor Statistic's employment situation. The ADP report only covers private (excluding government) payrolls.  Why Investors Care

[Chart]
The ADP employment report, which is based on actual payroll data processed by ADP, is released before the government's employment report and is aimed at improving payroll forecasts.
